Day 10: Devils Tower...and lots of driving

After another rainy night with lots of thunder, we packed our tent and got on the road again. Today’s main event was a visit to the Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming. The tower is consists of volcanic magma and is a very cool sight. Apparently, the tower was used in the movie “Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind”.

The guidebook and signs posted near the tower warned against rattle snakes. However, we did not see any other animals than a chipmunk, a rabbit, some eagles and prairie dogs.

We spend the afternoon on a rather eventless drive through Wyoming down to Thermopolis, where we were going to visit the Hot Springs State Park and enjoy a bath in hot thermal water Monday morning. When we arrived there, the skies were black and very threatening, so we decided not to spend another rainy night in the tent, and we got a room at a cheap motel instead. The town was a little run-down, and not very attractive so we hoped the thermal bath would make up for that.
